Vietnam’s Ginger Export Boom: A Golden Opportunity in the Global Market

Vietnam’s exports of ginger and turmeric have surged, highlighting the immense potential of this “gold mine” beneath the soil.
Statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) show that in 2024, Vietnam exported 29,544 tons of ginger, turmeric, and other spices, generating a total revenue of $59.5 million. Although the export volume decreased by 15.5% compared to 2023, the revenue increased significantly by 20.7%.
Shifts in Vietnam’s Ginger Export Markets
Vietnam’s ginger export market has undergone significant changes. In 2024, Indonesia, India, and Pakistan emerged as the primary destinations for Vietnamese ginger. In contrast, in 2023, China was the largest importer, purchasing 10,271 tons, followed by Bangladesh (6,585 tons), India (4,394 tons), and Laos.
Ginger is a common and affordable product in Vietnam, but internationally, it holds high value and is in great demand. In 2023, Vietnamese ginger was priced between 9-13 AUD/kg ($6-9 USD) in Australia. The product is typically packaged in 0.5kg or 1kg portions, primarily serving restaurants. Besides frozen ginger, processed ginger products, especially candied ginger, are highly popular in countries with cold climates.

Vietnam’s Ginger Export Potential
Currently, about 30 VPSA member companies and approximately 80 other enterprises participate in exporting ginger and turmeric. The three largest exporters include Synthiet Vietnam, Expo Commodities, and Phuc Loi.
According to Vietnam’s Trade Office in Australia and India, Vietnamese ginger holds substantial export potential in these markets. Compared to products from other countries, Vietnamese ginger is not only aromatic and flavorful but also more competitively priced. Notably, the price of Vietnamese ginger is lower than that of domestic products in many countries, providing a significant export advantage.
Vietnam has established itself as a global leader in spice exports, with an annual export value of approximately $1.5 billion. By 2025, this figure is expected to reach $2 billion, with 500,000 tons exported.
Beyond ginger, turmeric and other spices have also achieved impressive results. In 2024, turmeric exports reached $3 million, a 14-fold increase compared to 2023, while garlic exports hit $4.7 million, tripling in value.
Chili exports have also been lucrative, with 7,326 tons shipped in the first half of 2024, generating $17.9 million in revenue.
Although these products yield high returns, experts recommend implementing specific strategies for each crop, establishing appropriate mechanisms to meet market demands, and ensuring sustainability.
