Vietnam’s Star Anise Exports Soar Over 102% in March 2025

Vietnam’s star anise exports continue to shine on the global stage. According to preliminary data from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), in March 2025, Vietnam exported 1,469 tons of star anise, reaching a turnover of $5.1 million — an impressive 102.9% increase compared to February 2025. India remained the largest market, importing 1,111 tons, up nearly 5% month-over-month.

🌟 Strong Growth in the First Quarter

In the first three months of 2025, Vietnam exported 3,495 tons of star anise, earning a total export value of $12.2 million. This marks a significant 57.3% increase in volume and a 2.2% rise in value compared to the same period last year.

Star anise is regarded by the World Spice Organization as one of the world’s rarest and most valuable spices, predominantly grown only in Vietnam and China. Each year, only two harvest seasons are possible, making this spice even more treasured.

🌿 Star Anise: Vietnam’s Northern Treasure

In Vietnam, star anise cultivation is concentrated in the northern border provinces like Lạng Sơn and Cao Bằng. These regions provide the perfect climate and soil conditions for producing high-quality star anise that delivers not just flavor but also immense economic value.

Star anise is highly versatile, used both as a culinary spice and a natural remedy. It enhances dishes like the iconic “pho” and is also valued for its medicinal properties, helping with ailments such as colds, pain relief, and infection prevention.

📢 Global Reach and Rising Demand

Vietnamese star anise is now exported to major markets worldwide, including China, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Japan, and Germany. Apart from direct exports, Vietnamese exporters are promoting star anise through international e-commerce platforms like Alibaba and Amazon, further boosting global sales.

In recent years, India and China have emerged as Vietnam’s top two export markets, accounting for around 50% and 25% of total star anise exports respectively. India, in particular, with its billion-strong population and growing demand for spices and medicinal herbs, represents a golden opportunity. Vietnam currently dominates over 80% of India’s star anise and cinnamon import market.

India’s consumer spending is expected to soar from $1.5 trillion today to nearly $6 trillion by 2030, offering vast potential for Vietnamese agricultural and spice products.
