Yên Bái Builds Sustainable Raw Material Zones for Global Exports

Yên Bái Province has emerged as a leader in developing sustainable raw material regions, meeting the stringent requirements of demanding export markets. This success is attributed to a combination of progressive local policies and farmers embracing internationally certified production methods.

Expanding Organic Cinnamon Cultivation

Home to over 80,000 hectares of cinnamon plantations, Yên Bái boasts one of the largest cinnamon-growing areas in Vietnam. In recent years, farmers in districts such as Văn Yên, Trấn Yên, and Văn Chấn have embraced organic cinnamon farming.

Mr. Phạm Văn Hiếu, a farmer in Trấn Yên District, highlights the transformation:

“For 20 years, I used traditional methods—chemical fertilizers and pesticides—but the market was unstable, and prices fluctuated. Since 2017, with technical guidance from cooperatives, I have transitioned to organic practices. Today, my organic-certified cinnamon fetches 6–10% higher prices.”

Farmers like Mr. Hiếu have adopted practices such as using agricultural byproducts and microbial composts, avoiding herbicides, and preserving soil health through manual weeding. These efforts have led to the establishment of nearly 15,000 hectares of organic-certified cinnamon in Yên Bái.

The Vietnam Cinnamon and Star Anise Cooperative, which initially managed just 1.5 hectares of certified organic cinnamon, now collaborates with farmers to expand to over 600 hectares. Its processed products, including cinnamon oil, powder, and rolls, are exported to high-value markets such as the U.S., Japan, India, and the EU, generating annual revenues of over $1.25 million.

Diversifying Agricultural Commodities

Beyond cinnamon, Yên Bái has focused on developing value-added agricultural products such as tea, cassava starch, bamboo shoots, and timber. These initiatives have propelled the province’s annual export turnover to $30–40 million, contributing significantly to its economic growth.

Leveraging Plantation Codes for Export Growth

An essential component of Yên Bái’s export strategy is assigning plantation codes (MSVT) to ensure traceability and compliance with international standards. The province has issued 40 MSVTs, covering products such as:

  • Tea: 294 hectares in Văn Chấn District, exported to markets like the U.S., EU, and Russia.
  • Pomelo: 19.7 hectares in Yên Bình District, exported to the U.S.
  • Aquilaria trees: 60 hectares in Văn Yên District, exported to China and South Korea.

Efforts are also underway to certify 501 hectares of cardamom plantations for export to China.

A Vision for the Future

By focusing on sustainable and high-quality raw material development, Yên Bái is enhancing the global competitiveness of its agricultural and forestry products. The province now manages over 90,000 hectares of raw material forests, with 15,500 hectares certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards. Other significant initiatives include cultivating over 5,000 hectares of bamboo and 1,200 hectares of organic Shan tea.
