Vietnam Solidifies Position as Leading Star Anise Supplier
Vietnam continues to affirm its role as a leading star anise supplier globally, thanks to the spice’s distinctive aroma and versatile applications across the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Over 12,000 Tons were Exported in 11 Months.
Impressive Export Statistics
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Vietnam exported 1,147 tons of star anise in November 2024, generating $5 million in revenue. While this represents a 13.8% decrease from October, the cumulative figures for the first 11 months of 2024 remain robust, with 12,299 tons exported and earning $57.6 million.
Despite a 10.6% drop in export volume and a 19.1% decline in revenue compared to the same period last year, star anise remains a key product in Vietnam’s spice export portfolio.
India continues to dominate as the largest importer, accounting for 66% of Vietnam’s star anise exports with 8,116 tons. Other notable markets include:
- South Asia: Bangladesh and the Middle East.
- Asia-Pacific: Japan, China, and South Korea.
- Global Markets: The U.S. and EU nations.
The consistent demand from these markets highlights Vietnam’s ability to meet diverse requirements and preferences.

A Rare and Valuable Spice
Vietnam ranks second globally in star anise production, after China, with an estimated annual yield of 22,000 tons from 55,000 hectares. Primarily grown in the northern provinces of Lạng Sơn and Cao Bằng, star anise is both economically and culturally significant.
Key attributes of star anise cultivation:
- Harvested twice a year, making it a rare commodity.
- Trees typically begin flowering 4–5 years after planting and can remain productive for several decades.
- Mature trees yield up to 40–50 kg of star anise annually.
Expanding Opportunities in the Spice Industry
The global demand for spices and flavorings is increasing, creating lucrative opportunities for Vietnam’s spice exports, including star anise. By 2025, Vietnam aims to achieve $2 billion in spice export revenue, with an anticipated export volume of 500,000 tons.
To realize this goal, key initiatives include:
- Regional Development: Expanding star anise plantations under sustainable practices.
- Product Innovation: Developing blended spices to cater to market-specific tastes, such as those in India.
- Quality Enhancement: Leveraging scientific advancements to improve yields and meet international standards.
