Vietnam Exported Over 90,000 Tons of Cinnamon in 11 Months
The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) has reported impressive growth in Vietnam’s cinnamon exports during the first 11 months of 2024. Vietnam exported a total of 90,270 tons of cinnamon, earning $249.2 million in export revenue. Compared to the same period in 2023, export volume increased by 10.2%, and export value rose by 3.9%.
November Export Highlights
In November alone, Vietnam exported 10,754 tons of cinnamon, generating $28.8 million in revenue—a 5.8% increase in volume compared to October. The two primary markets were India and the United States, which accounted for 4,429 tons (41.2%) and 1,253 tons (11.7%) of exports, respectively.
India remained the leading export destination for Vietnamese cinnamon in 2024, with 31,829 tons shipped, representing 35.3% of the total export volume. The United States followed with 9,867 tons (10.9%), and Bangladesh ranked third with 7,536 tons (8.3%).
Challenges and Opportunities in Cinnamon Export
Vietnam boasts approximately 180,000 hectares of cinnamon plantations, with over 80,000 hectares located in Yên Bái Province. Key districts such as Trấn Yên, Văn Yên, and Văn Chấn feature over 30,000 hectares of concentrated cinnamon plantations, including 7,000 hectares certified as organic.
Vietnamese cinnamon has established itself in the global market; however, experts highlight that its export value remains modest compared to its potential. Much of Vietnam’s cinnamon is exported through intermediaries, which often results in price volatility and lower profit margins. Additionally, pesticide residues in cinnamon bark remain a concern for international buyers.
Global markets are increasingly emphasizing sustainability, green consumption, and carbon emission reductions. Buyers now demand traceable origins, environmentally friendly production, and adherence to social and environmental standards.
Strategies for Growth
To enhance cinnamon’s export value, experts recommend the following strategies:
- Improved Seed Quality: Invest in higher-quality seedlings to ensure superior yields.
- Sustainable Cultivation: Focus on sustainable planting and care to meet international standards.
- Collaborative Supply Chains: Strengthen coordination across the supply chain, from cultivation to export.
- Scientific Research: Conduct studies to address market requirements, including maximum residue levels and pest control solutions.
