Vietnam’s vibrant spice industry is making its mark on global markets. In the first nine months of 2024, Vietnam exported 21,841 tons of ginger, turmeric, and other spices, generating nearly $45 million in revenue. Though export volume decreased by 28.3%, the export value rose 9.9%, reflecting strong global demand for Vietnamese Ginger and Turmeric and spices.

A Look at Key Export Markets

Vietnamese ginger, turmeric, and spices are highly sought after in India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, our top export markets. In these regions, consumers recognize and value the quality and distinct flavor of Vietnamese spices.

In 2023, Vietnam’s ginger and turmeric exports reached 34,976 tons, generating $49.3 million, a significant increase of 222.4% from the previous year. With 30 members of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) and an additional 80 companies outside the association, Vietnam has a robust network to support the increasing global demand for its spices.

Ginger: A Beloved Export in High Demand

While ginger is a common ingredient in Vietnamese kitchens, it has become a prized commodity overseas. Vietnamese ginger is often exported in frozen form, and processed ginger products are also gaining popularity. Known for its health benefits—such as aiding digestion, easing nausea, and boosting immunity—ginger is especially sought after in colder countries, where candied ginger has become a favorite.

Turmeric: A Global Superfood

Turmeric, a rare tropical root with origins in India, is highly prized for its health properties. Vietnam boasts one of the largest turmeric cultivation areas globally, with over 50,000 hectares concentrated in the central and highland provinces like Quang Nam, Gia Lai, and Dak Nong. Vietnamese turmeric, known for its high curcumin content (3-5%), is particularly valuable for health and beauty applications.

Among turmeric products, turmeric powder is the most popular export. Recognized for its vibrant color and rich aroma, Vietnamese turmeric powder is packed with curcumin, a compound celebrated for its health benefits, including cancer prevention, digestive support, liver protection, and immune enhancement.

Vietnam’s Growing Global Spice Market

Vietnam is currently the world’s third-largest exporter of spices, following India and China. The nation’s spice industry includes 14 advanced processing plants, positioning Vietnam as a leader in the global spice market. In 2023 alone, Vietnam’s total spice export value surpassed $1.4 billion. With continued growth, the industry is targeting $2 billion in exports by 2025, with an estimated volume of 500,000 tons.
