The Significance of India as a Key Market
India has consistently been the largest importer of Vietnamese star anise. In 2023, India imported 8,499 tons, accounting for 57% of Vietnam’s total star anise exports. Vietnam’s unique ability to produce this highly sought-after spice gives it a competitive edge in the global market.
Why Star Anise is Known as a “Treasure” Spice
Vietnam and China are among the few countries capable of cultivating star anise. This evergreen tree, native to specific climates, is celebrated for its distinct aroma and flavor, making it highly valuable. Star anise flowers twice a year, typically in June (the first harvest, or “tứ quý”), and in August-September (the main harvest season).
Due to its slow growth and limited harvests (only twice per year), star anise is considered rare and precious. Each tree can yield fruit from the fifth year onward, with some trees continuing to produce for decades. After 10 years, one hectare of star anise trees can generate up to 400 million VND in annual revenue, making it a significant economic asset for local farmers.
Star Anise Cultivation in Vietnam
Lạng Sơn Province is the leading region for star anise cultivation in Vietnam. Over 43,370 hectares are dedicated to star anise, representing 70% of the country’s total area. Currently, 28,000 hectares are in stable production, yielding 7,500 to 16,000 tons of dried star anise yearly.
Vietnam’s Position in the Global Spice Market
Vietnam is the second-largest exporter of star anise globally and has ample room for growth in the spice market. In 2023, Vietnam’s total spice export value exceeded USD 1.4 billion, with a goal of reaching USD 2 billion by 2025.
Future Prospects and Challenges
The weather forecast for 2024 predicts further complications, with El Niño expected to impact crop production, including star anise. Climate change poses additional challenges, especially in areas already vulnerable to extreme weather. Despite these challenges, the demand for Vietnamese star anise continues to grow, offering potential for expanded production and export.
