Import and Export Insights
Vietnam’s cinnamon industry has shown strong performance in 2024, with exports reaching 69,350 tons and bringing in over $194.2 million in the first nine months of the year. Although the export volume rose by 2.7% compared to the same period last year, the export value saw a slight decrease of 2.8%.
In contrast, in September 2024, Vietnam imported 216 tons of cinnamon, valued at $0.5 million USD—a 14.6% decrease from the previous month. Indonesia stands out as the primary supplier, providing 107 tons, which accounts for nearly 50% of Vietnam’s cinnamon imports.
Vietnam’s Cinnamon Production: A Snapshot
A Growing Demand in Key Markets
Vietnamese cinnamon is exported to nearly 100 countries, holding substantial market shares in countries like:
- India, with 95% of its cinnamon imports coming from Vietnam.
- The United States, where Vietnamese cinnamon accounts for 36.5% of the market.
- Europe, where Vietnam holds a 35% share.

Vietnam’s cinnamon is well-represented in major global markets. However, only 18.6% of exports are processed cinnamon, with 70% of these value-added products going to the U.S. and only 12% to Europe. This presents significant potential for Vietnam to expand its value-added cinnamon offerings and increase its share in the premium market segment.
Building a Sustainable Cinnamon Ecosystem
Hoàng Thị Liên, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association, emphasizes the need to develop a cinnamon ecosystem that leverages Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to support sustainable growth. This ecosystem would link all players in the supply chain, ensuring that Vietnamese cinnamon meets international standards and increases its market value in demanding regions like the EU and UK.
Key areas for improvement include:
- Post-harvest quality enhancement to meet strict standards, such as heavy metal-free and lead-free requirements.
- Organic production methods to boost product value and meet consumer demand for sustainable spices.
- In-depth market understanding, especially regarding FTA requirements like tax and quality standards under agreements such as the EVFTA and UKVFTA.
With a clear understanding of market demands and careful organization of the supply chain, Vietnam’s cinnamon industry can strengthen its position globally and ensure high-quality exports from farm to table.
Strengthening Brand and Market Presence
To increase global recognition, Vietnamese cinnamon producers are encouraged to build brand trust by obtaining international certifications and meeting market-specific standards. With support from the FTA ecosystem, businesses can access additional financial and logistical support to enhance their processing capabilities, logistics infrastructure, and overall market appeal.
