Building a Sustainable Supply Chain for Cigarette Cinnamon
Vietnamese cinnamon products are exported to over 30 countries, including major markets like the United States and India, where demand is high but requires strict quality standards. Meeting these standards has prompted key improvements in the production and processing of Vietnamese cigarette cinnamon to boost its appeal worldwide.
In this article, the VietGlobal Team explores why this variety of cinnamon is so highly prized and what steps have been taken to boost its value.
The Quality and Process Behind Cigarette Cinnamon
Among the types of cinnamon, cigarette cinnamon is often considered a premium product. To achieve the high cinnamon oil content that enhances its flavor, the bark is harvested from cinnamon trees at least 10 years old. The bark must be thin, around 1-3mm, and have an oil content of 4% or more. These factors contribute to the cinnamon’s distinctive spicy flavor and rich aroma, making it a preferred choice for international buyers.
The manufacturing process begins with carefully removing the outer bark in 8-10cm pieces, followed by a two-step cleaning process. First, machines remove the outer skin; then, any remaining skin is cleaned by hand. Next, the bark is dried using a combination of cinnamon drying methods—either mechanical drying or natural sun drying—to reach a moisture content of 12%, which helps prevent fungal growth and damage.
Once dried, the bark curls into cigarette cinnamon, short sticks resembling a cigarette.
Expanding Vietnam’s Cinnamon Market for Global Demand
Yên Bái Province, the largest cinnamon-growing area in Vietnam, produces approximately 18,000 tons of cinnamon bark annually, along with significant quantities of twigs, leaves, and cinnamon wood for export. The development of a sustainable supply chain and value chains linking cinnamon production with consumption has elevated Vietnam’s standing as a top spices exporter.
As Vietnamese cinnamon products continue to meet international standards, the industry is working to improve both quantity and quality, making Vietnamese cinnamon an attractive choice for food manufacturing and other B2B sectors. This focus on sustainability and quality ensures that Vietnamese cinnamon remains a valuable and reliable choice for global markets.
