Vietnam’s Star Anise Exports Soar: Over 5,400 Tons Shipped to India in 2024
In the first seven months of 2024, Vietnam exported over 5,400 tons of star anise to India, solidifying its position as a major player in the spice market. India, in fact, accounts for a huge 63% of Vietnam’s star anise exports, and this figure has grown by 7% compared to the same period last year. At VietGlobal Export, we’re proud to be a part of Vietnam’s thriving spice export industry.
A Closer Look at the Numbers
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in July 2024 alone, Vietnam exported 1,662 tons of star anise, bringing in $7.8 million. That’s a 7.4% jump from the previous month.
In total, over the first seven months of the year, Vietnam exported 8,685 tons of star anise, earning $41.9 million. While the export volume increased by 5.1%, the total revenue saw a slight dip, down 17.1% compared to last year.
India wasn’t the only country snapping up Vietnam’s star anise. The U.S. imported 601 tons, up 7.9%, while Taiwan saw a big jump with 276 tons (up a whopping 228.6%). China, however, imported only 259 tons, which was a 63.4% decrease from the previous year.
Why is Star Anise So Special?
Star anise is a rare and valuable spice that you won’t find growing just anywhere. In fact, Vietnam is one of the very few places in the world where star anise is cultivated, alongside China. With just two harvest seasons a year, this spice is considered a true “treasure” in the spice world.
In Vietnam, star anise is mainly grown in the northern provinces, especially in Lang Son and Cao Bang. Each year, these areas produce over 16,000 tons of this fragrant spice.
Lang Son: Vietnam’s Star Anise Capital
Lang Son is often called the “capital” of star anise in Vietnam. It’s grown in several districts, including Van Quan, Binh Gia, Bac Son, and Trang Dinh, to name a few. The region’s connection to star anise runs deep—even back in the early 20th century, the French built a star anise essential oil factory in Lang Son!
Vietnam’s star anise is truly making waves in global markets, and the future looks bright for this precious spice. Want to stay updated on the latest market trends and pricing?
