Why Vietnamese Ginger and Turmeric Are Highly Sought After Worldwide
In the first half of this year, Vietnam recorded exports of 17,280 tons of ginger, turmeric, and other spices, generating $33 million—a 5.1% increase in value compared to the same period last year. Let’s explore why Vietnamese ginger and turmeric are so popular worldwide, particularly in India with VietGlobal Export.
Exceptional Growth in Vietnamese Spice Exports
According to recent data from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Vietnam exported 17,280 tons of ginger, turmeric, and other spices during the first two quarters of the year, with a total value of $33 million. India is the largest importer, accounting for 38.4% of this volume, followed by Bangladesh (20.6%) and Indonesia (8.1%).
Vietnam is currently the third-largest producer and processor of spices globally, behind only India and China. The country’s spice industry includes 14 factories with advanced deep-processing technology.
In 2023, Vietnam’s spice exports, including pepper, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, star anise, chilli, and cardamom, totalled $1.257 billion. Specifically, ginger and turmeric exports amounted to 34,976 tons, valued at $49.3 million, marking an impressive 222.4% increase compared to 2022.

Why Vietnamese Ginger Is in High Demand Worldwide
While ginger is a common and affordable product in Vietnam, it is highly sought after abroad. Vietnamese ginger is primarily exported in frozen form, but processed ginger is also popular, especially as a spice and for its digestive benefits. It is also widely used to alleviate nausea and combat common colds and flu.
Ginger Products Highly Popular in Cold Regions
Ginger candy, in particular, is in high demand in colder countries due to its flavor and warming properties. Vietnamese ginger is favored not only for its excellent quality but also for its competitive price, often more affordable than locally produced ginger in many export markets.
Major Markets for Vietnamese Ginger
China is currently the largest importer of Vietnamese ginger, with 10,271 tons, representing a significant 437% increase compared to last year. Bangladesh follows closely, importing 6,585 tons (a 100% increase), while India ranks third with 4,394 tons (a 50% increase). Laos also saw a dramatic rise, importing 2,927 tons—an incredible 2,401% increase.

Vietnamese Turmeric’s Growing Global Presence
Vietnam is among the world’s largest turmeric producers, with over 50,000 hectares dedicated to its cultivation (as of 2021). The main growing areas are located in the central and highland provinces, including Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak, and Dak Nong.
Turmeric and Its Global Appeal
Turmeric powder is the most popular product in international markets. Vietnamese turmeric is highly valued for its vibrant color, pleasant aroma, and high curcumin content—a compound with numerous health and beauty benefits. Curcumin has been shown to possess anti-cancer properties, improve digestion, protect the liver, boost immunity, enhance memory, and even whiten skin.

Pepper Export Success in Vietnam
Vietnam’s pepper industry has also experienced strong growth. In the first half of 2024, the export value of pepper increased by 30.5%, despite a 6.8% decrease in volume.
Pepper Exports: Key Figures for 2024
In the first half of 2024, Vietnam exported 142,586 tons of pepper, earning $634.2 million. Black pepper exports accounted for 125,959 tons, while white pepper made up 16,627 tons. The U.S. remains the largest market for Vietnamese pepper, importing 37,435 tons—a 44.6% increase from the previous year and representing 26.3% of Vietnam’s total pepper exports.
Germany, the UAE, India, and China are also key markets, with notable increases in import volumes from Germany (106.7%), the UAE (15.2%), and India (45.7%).

Pepper Price Trends
The rising price of pepper has driven up export values despite a decrease in export volume. The average export price of Vietnamese pepper has risen by $1,000 per ton compared to the same period in 2023. Currently, black pepper is priced at over $4,300 per ton, while white pepper fetches nearly $6,000 per ton.
A Promising Future for Vietnam’s Spice Industry
With increasing demand and competitive pricing, Vietnamese ginger, turmeric, and pepper are experiencing tremendous growth in global markets. As export volumes rise, particularly to key markets like India, Bangladesh, and China, Vietnam’s spice industry is well-positioned for continued success. The nation’s ability to provide high-quality products at competitive prices ensures that these spices will remain in high demand worldwide.
